Are you also going to leave?
On the heels of a series of mind-blowing miracles recorded in the first few chapters of John’s Gospel, Jesus had amassed quite an entourage of followers, many eager to witness the next super-fantastic presentation of God’s power on display. Still others were questioning His authenticity as they only knew Him to be “the son of Joseph and Mary”. And it was in the mix of this dichotomy that Jesus blew their minds with His declarative teaching, “I am the Bread of Life“. In fact, His statements were so audacious that a bold response was required from the listeners.
Belief in who He was, and a determination to follow Him, no matter the cost, was warranted. John 6, verses 66-67 (ESV) explain, “After this many of His disciples turned back and no longer walked with Him. So Jesus said to the twelve, ‘Do you want to go away as well?‘” In the New Living Translation, it reads, “Are you also going to leave?“
Fair question. Jesus knew His own journey to the Cross would be grueling. Would His followers remain true to the end? Many want the benefits that come with Jesus, but don’t truly want Jesus.
“Simon Peter answered Him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that You are the Holy One of God.‘” (John 6:68-69 ESV)
Remaining faithful when the cost is on full display is what Jesus is asking of His followers in these Last Days. Today, Jesus is still asking, “Are you also going to leave?” May we remain faithful, listening to hear what the Spirit is saying, and following His voice until He returns.
