Anointed for a Purpose

1 Samuel 16: 1, 13:  “Now the Lord said to Samuel, ‘How long will you mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel?  Fill your horn with oil, and go; I am sending you to Jesse the Bethlehemite.  For I have provided Myself a king among his sons.’….Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him(David) in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.  So Samuel arose and went to Ramah.”

Anoint:  Consecrate (Merriam-Webster)

I’ve been studying the life of King David with some of my dear sisters in Christ.  It’s been very powerful and eye-opening to me to once again consider how passionately God pursued David as “His man”, His appointed lineage through which He would send Jesus to pay the ultimate sacrifice.  One of the amazing details that this study brought back to my awareness was the length of time between David’s anointing that day and his actual reign over Israel.  22 years passed before David actually became king of God’s people in its fullness of the title!  Yet David remained faithful and operated in the anointing God had placed upon his life to fulfill each task he received…in the meantime.

Do you feel like you’re living “in the meantime”?  Perhaps at one time you knew God had anointed you to accomplish a task or fulfill a particular mission.  But in the meantime of the commission to the completion you’ve lost sight of the anointing that came upon you that day.

It’s important for each of us to be reminded of a few things here.  First, God can and will anoint you to do things that only you are destined to do.  Notice that David was selected from among his brothers and that he was the least likely to be chosen to do such great things in his life.  But God selected him.  Therefore, God anointed him, prepared him, equipped him, and kept him until the fulfillment came to pass.  God anoints different people to do different things, from ministerial assignments to teaching to working a 9-to-5 corporate job to raising a family. Walk within the path He has chosen for you and cultivate the anointing by dwelling daily in His presence & His Word.  Secondly, in everything David did “in the meantime” he did so by the leading of God.  And he did those things well.  Even in the times he was running from his enemy, Saul, he had an anointing to escape!  What he chose to do and how he responded to the situations qualified him all the more for the sacred anointing to become king when it was the right time.  And finally, David’s heart was always aware that God’s anointing was the end-all requirement for him to be successful in any way.  He remained tender to God and thankful, no matter what situation he found himself in.

What are you anointed to do?  Let that purpose be stirred up in you today.  Follow the track David followed and you will find total fulfillment, both “in the meantime” and in your final destination.

Be blessed,
Bridgette
